About Great-Scott - Private Tutoring Services in Oxfordshire, England

Inspired by Language

Who we are...

Great Scott is made from the expertise, experience and outstanding student results achieved when teaching is at its best.

Formed by Catherine Scott, an English teacher with over 20 years’ experience in the state-school sector, Head of A Level English Language, Whole School Literacy Lead, AQA Examiner and Moderator, enabling a unique, personalised learning experience for every student.

‘The seeds of Great Scott formed after I worked each Friday lunchtime with a student who enlightened me as to his way of working. He was thriving in other subjects but struggling in English. By teaching him in the classroom and then teaching him 1-2-1 I was able to see the power of personalised teaching and he taught me so much about how learning is a such a personal experience. It sounds clichéd but once the door is unlocked, a whole wonderful world awaits.’ Catherine Scott

The unique selling point of Great Scott is that we are a cooperative of teachers. With contacts spanning over twenty years, the aim is to recruit more trusted teachers into our family to tutor your child at the highest possible level. It is an exciting time to be part of Great Scott. If you have QTS and are interested in working for us, please email us here.

Too often, large tutoring recruitment businesses are charging parents high tutoring fees, taking a large cut of the profits and leaving the beleaguered teacher with very little. This means that less qualified or non-UK qualified recruits, with little or no knowledge of the examination boards or curriculum are being recruited to work as tutors.

Catherine Scott gained her PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) at the University of Bath. This was in Middle Years – KS2 and KS3. During her training, she became interested in the transition period between Year 6 and Year 7 and after completing her PGCE, decided to move into Secondary education. She started teaching at Kennet School in September 2005 where she was trained in KS4 and beyond. This enables me to teach the following year groups:

  • KS2 (Y3-Y6) SATS
  • KS3 (Y7-Y9) Common Entrance
  • KS4 (Y10-Y11) GCSE
  • KS5 (Y12-Y13) A Level English Language and A Level English Literature.

In addition to teaching, we also offer a bespoke Oxbridge Interview Service, coaching students on the process, the questions and the overall experience which is now often online. Both Catherine and her husband, a teacher in the Private sector and having been to Oxford University himself, have experience in Oxbridge admissions.
